Suit Tailoring Series: Fitting Suit Pants

Working through the alterations of the suit jacket has been fun but let’s move on to our most popular item; suit pants!

Suit pants are the most common garment that we see in the shop as evidence by the fact that when you buy a full suit you can in fact buy two pairs of pants for every jacket. Suit pants are well loved, heavily worn and deserve to fit right and look good.

We’ll start by taking a look at the different ways we can alter and adjust the suit pant. The most common alterations for a suit pant are taking in the legs for a tapered or ‘pegged’ look, taking in the waist or letting the waist back out, and of course adjusting the length by shortening or lengthening the pant.

When we are pinning these items in the shop it’s important to know that the way the pant looks and feels when it is pinned is exactly how it will look and feel when it is sewn so we have a lot of flexibility here to make adjustments before we actually commit to sewing the alteration. Keep this in mind when you are fitting suit pants yourself so that you know what to expect and can make any adjustments ahead of time.

Follow along with us below as we walk you through pinning and measuring of the suit pant!
